About the Artist

I’m a Western Australian landscape artist based in Perth, creating original oil paintings inspired by light, atmosphere and the natural world around me.

Although I always loved drawing as a child and into my teenage years, painting came into my life much later. Like many people, life gradually became filled with work, sport, family and raising children. It wasn’t until my forties, after stepping away from competitive sport, that I found myself searching for something that felt equally absorbing and meaningful.

That reconnection happened unexpectedly on a camping trip with my wife and children. We sat in a field drawing together and something clicked back into place. Before long, I decided to try painting for the first time. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I knew I was drawn to it immediately.

Soon after, I enrolled at the Claremont School of Art in Perth, where I spent two years learning the fundamentals of oil painting, composition and colour. More importantly, it was during that time that I realised painting had become something deeper than a hobby. It gave me a sense of fulfilment, purpose and challenge that I hadn’t experienced elsewhere.

Over the years my work has continued to evolve. Early on, I was primarily focused on observation and realism, carefully painting what I saw in front of me. These days, I’m far more interested in atmosphere, movement, colour and the emotional experience of being immersed in a landscape.

Western Australia plays a huge role in that process. The quality of light here is extraordinary — from bright summer mornings to distant storm fronts and soft evening colour moving through trees and open paddocks. I’m constantly inspired by the local flora, shifting weather and birdlife that surrounds us.

In recent years, the garden around our home has also become an important source of inspiration. What began as a completely cleared block has slowly grown into a layered, living space filled with native plants, changing shadows and visiting birdlife, including Carnaby black cockatoos, king parrots, magpies and willy wagtails. Spending time quietly observing these small moments has naturally found its way into the paintings.

My process is always evolving and experimentation plays a large role in the work. I’m continually searching for better ways to capture light and atmosphere through expressive brushwork and layered colour. Some paintings come together quickly, while others seem to fall apart entirely before eventually finding their balance again.

In fact, one large painting that later sold on its very first day online was almost thrown away several times during the process. Looking back, I’ve come to realise that many of the strongest paintings pass through difficult stages. Pushing beyond that uncertainty often gives the work more life and energy in the end.

Today, my paintings balance recognisable form with areas that dissolve into colour, gesture and texture up close. I want the work to feel immersive and alive rather than overly fixed or literal.

Above all, I hope the paintings encourage people to pause for a moment — to slow down, look again, and feel a sense of calm, familiarity and connection to the landscape.
