Arbour in Bloom

Arbour in Bloom was inspired by the rose-covered arbour in our garden, a place that seems to come alive when the late afternoon light begins to filter through the trees.

The painting invites the viewer along a path towards the arbour, where white climbing roses become the focal point of the composition. Expressive, directional brushstrokes create a gentle sense of movement through the lawn, while cool blues, violets and greens describe the shrubs resting in shadow on either side. Beyond the arbour, layers of flowers, foliage and distant trees draw the eye deeper into the landscape beneath a soft blue sky.

In this work, I continued exploring the relationship between light and atmosphere. Rather than recording the garden exactly as it appeared, I rearranged elements of the scene to strengthen the feeling of being immersed in the space. The contrast between warm sunlight and cool shadow, together with layered colour and expressive mark making, aims to capture not only the appearance of the garden, but the quiet sense of calm and discovery that inspired the painting.

Like many of my recent works, Arbour in Bloom reflects my ongoing pursuit of light, atmosphere and the beauty that can be found close to home.
