The Secret Garden

A quiet moment of soft light and shadow.

“The Secret Garden” was inspired by an evening in our garden as the sun sat low behind thin cloud and mist. Looking through the trees and shrubs, small patches of light moved across the ground and deeper into the garden beyond.

The foreground sits largely in cool shadow — layered blues, greens and violets — while the background opens into softer pastel light in pinks, grey violets and greens.

This painting grew from a place that has slowly evolved over the last few years. What began as a completely cleared block of earth has become a space full of trees, shrubs and quiet corners that my wife and I now spend a lot of time in.
